ChexSystems Explained: How to Check, Freeze, and Dispute Your Report

Part of the Specialty Credit Reporting Agencies Guide.

ChexSystems is the most well-known deposit-account bureau. Banks and credit unions use it to screen new checking and savings account applicants for unpaid negative balances, suspected fraud, or accounts closed for cause. If you have ever been denied a bank account with no clear explanation, ChexSystems is the most likely reason.

How to Pull Your Report

You are entitled to one free report every 12 months, plus a free consumer score on request. Create an online account to request your report — it will appear in a "Correspondence Center" as a downloadable PDF rather than showing instantly on screen.

How to Freeze Your ChexSystems File

Freezes can be placed online (after creating an account, via the "Place a Security Freeze" page), by phone, or by mail. Freezes activate within 24 hours, and you will receive a PIN by mail to manage or lift it later. A freeze prevents banks from accessing your ChexSystems file at all until you lift it — useful if you are not actively opening new accounts and want to prevent unauthorized access.

How to Dispute an Error

The online dispute portal often redirects users to call 800-428-9623 directly. A representative reviews each disputed line item, and unverified negative information must be corrected or deleted within 30 days under the FCRA.

Denied a bank account? The denying bank is required to tell you if ChexSystems was the reason, under FCRA adverse action notice rules. Request your report immediately once you know ChexSystems was involved, and dispute anything inaccurate before applying elsewhere.
