Clarity Services Explained: Payday Loans, Installment Loans & Subprime Credit Data

Part of the Specialty Credit Reporting Agencies Guide.

Clarity Services, now operating as a part of Experian, collects data on payday loans, installment loans, auto title loans, rent-to-own transactions, and check-cashing services. It is used mainly by lenders serving near-prime and subprime borrowers — the kind of nontraditional lending activity that does not always appear on a standard Equifax, Experian, or TransUnion report.

How to Pull Your Report

You are entitled to one free report and free score every 12 months upon request. Requesting your own report does not affect your credit score.

Freezing Your Clarity File

Freezes are available by phone using the number above, or through the consumer portal at consumers.clarityservices.com.

How to Dispute an Error

File disputes with Clarity directly and with the original data furnisher — the lender who reported the information. Clarity must investigate free of charge and correct verified errors under the FCRA.

Applying for a payday, installment, or title loan and getting unexpected denials? Your Clarity file is a likely factor even if your mainstream credit score looks fine — these two data sets are tracked completely separately.
